Goals:

 

This course is designed to introduce the basic tools in statistics for engineers. Basic probability and statistics are introduced. Computer softwares, such as EXCEL and R, will be used to assist statistical computing. Applications in engineering and other areas are demonstrated as examples. Emphasis of this course is on the understanding and applications of basic statistics. Undergraduate knowledge of calculus and linear algebra is helpful to understand the derivation of formulas.

    • Homework & Participation: 30%
    • Midterm Exam: 30%

    Some examples are put in 作業參考與習題解答. The analysis results may have errors and need further improvements. However, they demonstrate some possible applications of statistics.

    Examples:

    什麼是降雨機率?

      降雨機率是預報人員根據各種氣象資料,經過整理、分析、研判、討論後,預測出
    在某一地區及一定時段內降雨機會的百分數,它是指在過去同樣的天氣狀況中,每一百
    天中有幾天會下雨。這是一種機率預報,只是預測降雨的「機會」有多少,並不代表一
    定會或一定不會下雨。

      嚴格的降雨機率預報定義,是指各預報區未來36小時內的三個時段(每12小時為一
    時段)出現0.1公厘或以上的降雨機會,因此和降雨時間以及面積都沒有關係。例如預
    報台北市降雨機率為70%,就是指有七成的機會在台北市的任何一個地方出現降雨。
